[Stub]Parts therapies (Voice Dialogue, IFS, Gestalt, Trauma Constellation work, NLP, Hypnotherapy, others)
All human beings have “inner parts” and it’s essential to work with these. Otherwise (plus a lot more than this) you can do therapy talking only to the survival-energy part of a person and never even meet the part of the person which owns the pain of the problem.
Parts Therapy
Parts therapy is not one single therapy. Rather it’s an umbrella term for many therapeutic techniques that directly address inner parts. These include Voice Dialogue, IFS, Gestalt, Trauma Constellation work, NLP, Hypnotherapy and lots of others.
Inner parts are natural and obvious, yet at the same time wondrous and magical.
Natural because we all know that we often have one part thinks/feels this, and another part who thinks/feels that. It’s easy to recognise the children’s film Inside Out as true to life.
Wondrous and magical because these parts can have a voice of their own which our everyday Self hears and thinks – “That’s amazing – that’s not my voice. Who within me is speaking??” And yet at the same time we do recognise the voice as part of ourselves (or Our Selves).

There are lots of ways you can think about parts. A few types are:
- Social parts. There are things we show to others, things we hide: lovable part and unlovable part.
- The famous Parent – Adult – Child from Transactional Analysis. The Child is the part of us who without realising walks through the world as if six years old and makes angry demands for love or has a reactive No to every single thing. The Adult is the grown-up part of us, and the Parent is outside authorities telling us rules do this, don’t do that.
“To be identified with your mind is to be trapped in time: the compulsion to live almost exclusively through memory and anticipation. This creates an endless preoccupation with past and future and an unwillingness to honour and acknowledge the present moment and allow it to be. The compulsion arises because the past gives you an identity and the future holds the promise of salvation, of fulfilment in whatever form. Both are illusions.”
– Eckhart Tolle
